Art Card vs Thermal vs PVC: Which Badge Stock Should You Choose?
Badge stock is the material your badge is printed on. The three main types, art card, thermal, and PVC, each have distinct advantages. Choosing the wrong one leads to smudged names, peeling edges, or badges that don't survive the event.
## Art Card (Paper Badges)
Art card is thick, coated paper stock. It's what most people picture when they think of a conference badge.
**Specifications:**
- Weight: 260-350 gsm
- Finish: Matte or glossy
- Print method: Inkjet or laser
**Pros:**
- Best colour reproduction, photos and logos look sharp
- Lowest cost per badge
- Easy to write on for last-minute changes
- Eco-friendly options available (recycled stock)
**Cons:**
- Not waterproof, spills and rain ruin them
- Creases easily in pockets
- Not durable enough for multi-day events
**Best for:** Single-day seminars, workshops, and events where badge quality matters but durability doesn't.
## Thermal (Fanfold and Roll)
Thermal stock is heat-sensitive paper or synthetic material. Direct thermal printers (Zebra, Brother) print directly onto it.
**Specifications:**
- Types: Paper thermal, synthetic thermal (BOPP)
- Formats: Fanfold (pre-cut) or continuous roll
- Print method: Direct thermal or thermal transfer
**Pros:**
- Fastest to print, no drying time
- Synthetic thermal is water-resistant
- No ink costs
- Fanfold stacks neatly for pre-printing
**Cons:**
- Black only (unless using thermal transfer ribbons)
- Paper thermal fades over time
- Less premium feel than art card or PVC
**Best for:** High-volume events, trade shows, and any event where speed and cost matter more than colour.
## PVC (Plastic Cards)
PVC badges are credit-card-quality plastic. They're the most durable option.
**Specifications:**
- Thickness: 0.76 mm (standard CR80)
- Print method: Dye-sublimation or retransfer
- Optional: Smart chip, magnetic stripe, RFID
**Pros:**
- Waterproof and tear-proof
- Lasts for years
- Supports access control technologies
- Premium feel, attendees keep them
**Cons:**
- Highest cost per badge
- Slowest to print
- Requires specialized printer
- Not eco-friendly
**Best for:** Multi-day conferences, membership events, and any occasion where badge longevity matters.
